YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Dawn Almonte, 44, of Yorktown Heights, won the $1 million Powerball Prize on Dec. 5, according to the New York State Lottery. Almonte won the drawing by matching the first five numbers drawn.
“My husband actually checked the ticket for me,” Almonte said in a press release. “I was already asleep when he woke me up at 1:30 in the morning telling me I need to come see something. I saw that the first five numbers matched and I couldn’t believe it!”
Almonte purchased her ticket at ACME on East Main Street in Mohegan Lake, according to NYS Lottery.
“We were heading home from the Home Depot and decided to stop for some Powerball tickets," she said. "I like to play the Lottery draw games and try to play a dollar for every draw.”
The $1 million Powerball prize is paid out as a one-time lump sum. Almonte will receive a net check totaling $658,861 after required withholdings.
“It feels good—surreal," she said. "You never think it’s going to happen to you.”
Almonte does not have specific plans for her windfall as yet.
“Our family has been through a lot, so we’ll be smart with the money," she said. "I might invest in my own business or buy a new home.”
