Ossining, NY –The Ossining Arts Council (OAC) and The Westchester Collaborative Theater (WCT) will present The 2018 Living Art Event (LAE), showcasing OAC artworks and six original WCT one-act plays inspired by selected works. A docent led tour through a gallery will pause intermittently to allow the art to spring to life. The LAE runs weekends from March 2 through March 24 at the OAC Steamer Firehouse Gallery in Ossining, NY; Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm; Saturdays at 2 pm and Sundays at 3 pm; talk-backs on Sundays, March 11 and March 18 at 3pm. The OAC Steamer Firehouse Gallery is located at 117 Main St., 2nd Floor in Ossining, NY.  General tickets are $20.  Discounted tickets are available for WCT and OAC members, students, seniors and groups of 5+. Jill Kiefer, the incoming president of OAC, says, “We’re very excited to be part of this collaborative effort, the fourth LAE presentation!”

The plays are:

The Bees Are Watching by C.J. Ehrlich: Two EPA officials on a smoking break are at odds with new edicts to deregulate environmental protections. Quinn is ready to stand up for her ideals, and resist. Scottie, "just following orders", is being tortured by nature itself.

Friends by Choice by Howard Lipson: After over 40 years, two sisters finally reveal an event that could have changed their lives together.

The Image of Women by Evelyn Mertens: A young woman wrestles with her inner conflicts over the loss of the slender figure she has always treasured as her pregnancy begins to transform both her body and her perception of herself.

The Loud Hours by Pat O'Neill: The ghosts of the past hang heavily during the loud hours of the night as Tom and Jess struggle to let go the night before Jess leaves for college.

Mr. Green by Angelo Parra: In a doctor’s office waiting room, a lonely, aged African-American, hoping for a life-saving kidney, waxes pensive and nostalgic to a fellow patient, revealing his unyielding will to carry on.

Clam Diggers and Mussel Suckers by Jane Ann Valentine: Brody and Waverly, two college students on a date, share an unexpectedly tender moment while watching the sunrise over the water at City Island. Can something so impersonal as an app where you swipe right for likes lead to something like love for these two millennials?

The Ensemble of actors includes: Enid Breis, Keith Bulluck, Jeff Callan, Michelle Daneshvar, Anne Glickman, Tom Lloyd, Sandy Rooney, Roberta G. Robinson, Dan Slavin.

The plays were inspired by artworks created by: Margaret Zeitlin; Liv Gus; Keith Gordon; Judith Gordon; Brynley Lazar; and Barbara Levine.

Catching up with Westchester County Executive George Latimer

George Latimer, our new county executive, has been in office now for a little over half a year. I thought it might be a good time to check in with my friend to see how things were going. You can see the interview in its entirety on Channel 74 (Optimum) at 9 p.m. Wednesday nights.

What happened last November?

The election last November brought change throughout Westchester County. In my ...

You’ll Get a Kick out of Musical Classic ‘Anything Goes’

I’ve loved Broadway musicals since I was smaller than a piano bench. That’s one reason I enjoy writing about local productions in this space. The more people who go to musicals, the happier it makes me.

I didn’t realize how old-fashioned about musicals I could be, though, until my wife Elyse and I at long last saw “Wicked.” It only took us 15 years to get there.

Loose Ends

July 20, 2018

Real life is not the movies.

Things are not wrapped up in a neat bow, motivations are not explained, and things often don’t make sense.

Two weeks ago, a man driving “triple digits” in a Dodge Charger exited the Taconic State Parkway at Underhill Avenue, blew through a stop sign, and t-boned an SUV, injuring a mother and her 19-year-old daughter. Here is ...

The Adventures of Superdog

I was always very impressed that my dog could bark on command and come when I called his name, until I read in the newspaper about a dog that saved his owner’s life by calling 9-1-1. Apparently, when his owner had a seizure, the dog pushed a speed-dial button for 9-1-1, barked into the receiver for help, and then opened the door when the responders arrived.

Honestly, though, it’s ...

If You See Something, Say Something

July 11, 2018

I am writing this letter because I see something different with the new Yorktown Town Board. I see an open government instead of a dictatorship with rubber stamps. I see the new Town Board working together for the best interests of the residents in Yorktown.

The auditor suggests in his report to not start a capital project without having the money first. A bad example is the Granite Knolls ...
