Book Club for Women with Cancer

Open to people living with breast, ovarian or gynecological cancer. To learn more or to pre-register (pre-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED) call Support Connection at 914-962-6402 or 800-532-4290.

Enjoy a lively discussion while spending time with other women who’ve also heard the words “you have cancer.” The book for this session is The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Written and published in the 1980’s, The Handmaid’s Tale journeys into a totalitarian society that has replaced the United States in a not-too-distant century. Join us as we explore this future fiction and discuss where it takes us. “Just as the world of Orwell’s 1984 gripped our imaginations, so will the world of Atwood’s handmaid.” Joyce Johnson, The Washington Post.

Milestone

By the time you read this, I will have had another birthday (Sept. 22). Unfortunately, I am at that stage of life when birthday bliss has been supplanted by the somber recognition of the ominous validity of actuarial tables. Seventy may not seem like an extraordinarily high number, but when I find myself stuck on the Major Deegan on a workday morning, my mind inevitably begins to wonder if my ...

I Never Met a Musical Like Meta-Musical ‘Urinetown’

On the face of it, the conceit behind award-winning stage musical “Urinetown” seems absurd: Citizens are required to pay for the privilege of relieving themselves at public urinals.

To baby boomers, charging people to use public restrooms is neither absurd nor unthinkable. True, there were no coin-operated urinals when we were young, but there were stalls that required a dime to be ...

An FAQ on Political Signs

September 26, 2018

Once upon a time, I wanted to be a cop.

That’s a scary thought for people who know how clumsy I am, but I have always been obsessed with rules and laws and I wanted to be the person who upheld them.

It’s probably a good thing that dream was never realized because being a cop requires nuance. It requires knowing when to let someone off with a warning or a slap on the wrist and ...

Plumber’s Assistant: “Hey, my sister’s name is Tracy, too. That’s so funny! Do you spell it with an e or no e?”

ME: “Um, no ‘e’.”

PA: “My sister doesn’t spell it with an e, either.  I mean, who needs an extra ...

Getting It Right

September 26, 2018

For someone raised on the Bill of Rights and traditional American values, it’s been strange and disquieting to hear the press called the enemy of the people. We can see, all around the world, the danger of not having a free and unfettered press. Labels are irrelevant. Liberal or conservative: what matters is that questions are asked—the more inconvenient the better—and facts ...
