Repair Cafe - Yorktown

What do you do with a broken toaster?  Or with a bike when the wheel runs out of true?  Or with a sweater full of moth holes?  Toss it?  No way!

In the Fellowship Hall at Grace Lutheran Church at the corner of Curry and Gomer Streets in Yorktown, everything centers on making repairs.  Starting from 10AM and ending at 2PM, various volunteer repair experts will be available to help people make all possible repairs free of charge.  Tools and materials will also be on hand.  People visiting the Repair Café will bring their beloved but broken items from home (limit 2 items, please - and no gas-powered items).  Lamps, toasters, bikes, clocks, clothes, toys, wooden items, crockery, jewelry, computers / electronics... anything that is broken is welcome.  And can more than likely be repaired.  The Repair Café specialists almost always have the know-how to determine whether your item can be repaired, and if possible, make the repair.

By promoting repairs, we can help reduce mountains of waste which otherwise ends up in landfills.  Repair Café is also meant to put neighbors in touch with each other in a new way.  And to discover that a lot of know-how and practical skills can be found close to home.  Above all, Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is.

Happy 50th, Woodstock Alumni… We Are Golden

On Aug. 15, 1969, I finished the Friday shift at my summer job at Times Square Stores (TSS) in Hempstead, Long Island, picked up a couple of friends in my dad’s Plymouth, and off we went to the Catskills for (as the publicity poster proclaimed) “An Aquarian Exposition in White Lake, N.Y.,” better known simply as “Woodstock.”

In the past half-century, it has ...

The Truth About Coyotes

August 18, 2019

If you’re a Westchester resident, it’s safe to say you have at the very least heard of the coyotes that live right here in our backyards. Whether you’ve seen them yourself, heard them howling in the night, or know a neighbor who has had some sort of encounter, nearly everyone has some version of a coyote story. While we likely all have that in common, where we may differ is in ...

Please Don’t Weaken the Proposed New Tree Law

August 19, 2019

As the Town Board considers revisions to the proposed new tree law, it appears to be seeking a middle ground on the issue of mitigation, somewhere between requiring mitigation or making it optional. But the middle ground solution that’s being considered, i.e., including a presumption that mitigation will be required but, at the same time, allowing the Planning Board to waive the ...
