Being at home these past few months has prompted many people to tackle their home improvement “to-do” lists, with painting and decorating projects in full swing around the area.
Wallauer Paint & Design, the fourth-generation, family-owned and operated business headquartered in White Plains, has been serving these needs since 1921. As one of the largest Benjamin Moore paint dealers in North America, it has 16 stores in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties.
The shops offer interior and exterior paints and stains, along with decorating services, blinds, shades, shutters, custom bedding, carpeting, draperies and window coverings (with professional installation) and more. Six of the locations contain dedicated design centers where staff can provide customers with decorating expertise and offer advice about color and design.
According to the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Ed Klein, it is Wallauer's longtime service ethic, along with an extensive selection of paint, design and hardware products—many under one roof— that have made the business a regional fixture. Unlike big-box stores, the retailer is dedicated to serving customers in a personalized, old-fashioned way, by offering quality products and competitive price points.
“We kind of look at ourselves as the go-to place for all things DIY and home improvement; the local aspect is a big driver, of course.”
In partnership with Ace Hardware at four of their locations, Wallauer continues to focus on its “Pro Centers,” described by Klein as a store within a store—where the full-service hardware store features a Wallauer’s paint and design center at the same location. To make purchases even easier, the company also runs an e-commerce site, offers curbside pickup, as well as home delivery for its products.
To serve the needs of contractors and individual homeowners who are undertaking paint and other home improvement projects, Klein asserted that Wallauer Paint & Design is taking customer safety very seriously, with necessary precautions now in place for those who visit the stores.
“We’ve got plexiglass up at all counters, we do social distancing, masks and gloves—even employee temperature checks,” he said. “We want to make sure our customers feel safe and to know that Wallauer is doing our part; most importantly, we want to be their local and convenient location.”
Klein, who has been the COO and General Manager of Wallauer since 2017, is a veteran of the paint business, having previously worked for Benjamin Moore for 17 years. He has noticed that the current situation has caused some changes in long-standing habits of customers.
“Typically, when somebody wants to do a painting project, whether it is a room or a house, it has a cycle of every four to five years,” he said. “I think what is happening now is that we are resetting the cycle; no matter if the house or a room was painted two years, four years or ten years ago, people are wanting to paint it now and new cycles are being set. He remains optimistic about the business, despite these uncertain times.
“I’m seeing a lot more of these projects, even for a fresh coat or a new look, people are just doing it,” he said.
