YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Yorktown Auto Body is giving away five cars to residents in need.

The contest, explained owner Perry Gusikoff, is a way for Yorktown Auto Body to celebrate 10 years in the community.

Applications are being accepted from Aug. 1 to Sept. 1. Candidates, who cannot nominate themselves, must be suffering from some sort of hardship, be it financial, medical or otherwise. Beyond being a Yorktown resident, Gusikoff said there are no specific criteria that candidates must meet to be eligible.

“You can be a student and you’re traveling down to Manhattan for college and it’s taking you four hours a day and you’re a great kid,” Gusikoff said.

“It has to somehow impact your life,” he added. “That by receiving this vehicle, it puts you in a better position.”

In addition to explaining the candidate’s hardship in 150 words or less, applications must include:

• A letter of good conduct from the Yorktown Police Department;

• A clean driving record from their insurance carrier or the DMV; and

• Documentation of hardship.

The applications will be reviewed by a five-person committee of Yorktown residents. Winners will be selected on Sept. 15.

Many people might view Yorktown as being a wealthy community, but Gusikoff said he expects there will be many deserving candidates.

“There are people in need right here in town,” he said. “You think that we’re in an area where everything is a perfect situation for everybody, and it’s not. There are a lot of people who could use a helping hand.”

The cars being given away are: a Dodge Dart, a Ford Fusion, a Honda Accord, a Honda Pilot and a Nissan Rogue.

Gusikoff estimated that each car is worth somewhere between $8,000 and $11,000.

Winners may be required to pay taxes, insurance, registration and other associated fees, but Gusikoff said donors are already stepping up to cover those costs, as well.

“It would be great if we could raise that money also for them,” Gusikoff said. “That’s what we’re going to do with any other funds we raise.”

Application forms can be downloaded from yorktownautobody.com and either mailed to Yorktown Auto Body (1798 Front St., Yorktown Heights) or hand-delivered.
