YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Tim O’Callaghan, a Yorktown High School senior, is a member of the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams. He will play Division 1 lacrosse at College of the Holy Cross.
How old were you when you started playing soccer and what got you started?
I started playing organized soccer when I was 4 years old, and that was because I was always around a soccer ball while my older sisters played.
What is your favorite thing about being on the soccer team?
The atmosphere. There is nothing like the excitement of stepping out onto the field and hearing the first whistle blow for the start of a game.
What is your favorite team activity or pre-meet or post-game ritual that you share with your teammates? What about a personal pre-meet or post-meet ritual?
My teammates and I like to listen to music together in the locker room about an hour before games. Personally, I like to watch highlights of players like Ronaldinho, Ibrahimovic or Javier Pastore before the game to get my creativity going.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
My dad has been my biggest role model because he consistently teaches me how to be a leader and helped me develop a unique competitive edge.
Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know.
I am a huge horror movie fan
Do you plan on continuing playing sports in college?
I am currently committed to play Division 1 lacrosse at Holy Cross, but I have not closed the door on the prospect of playing soccer there, too.
Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what are you planning on studying and why?
I am not 100 percent sure of what I want to study exactly, but definitely something in the math or science fields.
Who is your favorite professional athlete and pro (or college sports) team?
My favorite athlete is Kylian Mbappé and my favorite team is Paris Saint-Germain.
What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a meet?
I like to listen to rap music a couple of hours before and Irish music or EDM right before the game.
If you could pick one place to visit on vacation that you’ve never been to, where would you go and why?
I would like to visit Paris and watch PSG play live.
What is your favorite food to eat before or after a meet?
Before, I like to have something light like a granola bar, and after, I often have pasta with my mom’s phenomenal red sauce.
Best place to eat in Yorktown and why?
Definitely Heavy Bear Deli, because I simply can’t go a week without their famous “Wacky.”
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I would love the ability to read minds because it would make every aspect of life so much easier.
What is your favorite social media app? Why?
Probably Twitter, because it keeps you up to date with news but is also always good for a laugh.
What would you tell other young athletes growing up in the district about the experience of being part of the (sport) team? Why should they go out for the team?
There is nothing like Yorktown soccer. The selfless environment that Coach Polchinski and Coach Huff have created makes the team a family. This program has provided me a home away from home these past four years and I am forever grateful for that. The tremendous crowds at games and constant support from the school as a whole are unmatched as well. If you truly love the sport, Ytownfút will provide all of the tools for an incredible experience and will shape you into a better person on and off of the field.
