YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Zakary Stanik was a senior captain on the Yorktown boys soccer squad, that recently concluded its season at 13-4.

That record included, as the No. 6 seed, a 2-1 overtime victory against visiting No. 11 Tappan Zee on Oct. 24, in the opening round of the Section 1 Class A Tournament.

Stanik played mainly fullback, left back or right back, before being moved to a more attacking role as an outside midfielder.

He played two years on the Husker boys varsity soccer team, including this season.

How old were you when you started playing soccer and what got you started?

I first started playing soccer at the age of 4. My dad was the one that introduced me to the sport, as he grew up playing soccer and is very passionate about the game.

What is your favorite thing about being on the soccer team at Yorktown?

The camaraderie that comes with spending countless hours with a group of people that I see as family.

What is your favorite team activity or pregame or postgame ritual that you share with your teammates?

My favorite team activity are the dinners that we hold throughout the year. This is a time where we can share laughs and create unforgettable memories that we can all look back on in a few years.

Do you have any goals for your final season at Yorktown?

To win a section title for the program, the school, and most importantly the town.

Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?

My dad. His work ethic and upbeat personality is like no other person I’ve ever met, and I have definitely molded my own character around his great qualities.

Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?

I have an interest in astronomy.

Do you plan on continuing playing soccer in college? Tell us about where you are going to school and why you chose it?

Currently I am not planning to play soccer in college, but if the chance does present itself then I will most definitely take it. I am not completely set on a specific college that I would like to attend but a few of my favorites are Lehigh, Tulane, and Boston College.

Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what are you planning on studying and why?

In college, I am most likely to study biology or chemistry as I wish to pursue a pre-dental program during my undergraduate years. My interest for this field was influenced by my father, as he is involved in the medical field.

Who is your favorite professional athlete and pro (or college) sports team?

My favorite professional athlete is Christian Eriksen and I do not have a favorite sports team.

What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a game?

I like to listen to a lot of hip hop with a bit of modern pop music mixed in.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

The ability to time travel because I would be able to fix some of my past mistakes.

If you could pick one place to visit on vacation that you’ve never been to, where would you go and why?

England, because I’ve always wanted to attend a Premier League soccer game.

What is your favorite food to eat before or after a game?

After a game, my favorite food to eat is my mom’s homemade lasagna.

Best place to eat in Yorktown and why?

My favorite place to eat in Yorktown is Pappous Greek Kitchen because the food there is delicious and unique.

What’s the go-to app on your phone and why?

Instagram. It is one of the most popular social media platforms of our generation. Whether it’s catching up on daily news or sending funny videos to my friends, Instagram seems to encompass everything I look for in a great app.

For a young athlete growing up in the Yorktown district, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the soccer team and why should they go out for the team?

What I would say is to simply make the most out of your high school experience. Yorktown soccer has made a name for itself thanks to the hard, grueling work of previous classes and to be a part of such a program is simply an honor.
