MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Somers freshman Jay Wilkinson placed fifth at the Middies Midseason Dive Invitational held Friday, Jan. 17, at Middletown High School.
Wilkinson, who represented the Yorktown-Somers varsity dive team, finished fifth among 21 divers from 10 school districts. He scored 383.10 points, finishing behind only Caleb Kimbrell from Monroe-Woodbury (482.75), Grant Moore from Goshen (437.65), Jordan Vazquez from Pine Bush (424.70) and Omer Mosker from Monroe-Woodbury (389.80).
Wilkinson impressed the judges with his Inward 1-1/2 Somersault Tuck (42.90 points), the Reverse 1-1/2 somersault tuck (42 points), and the back 1-1/2 somersault tuck (40 points). Wilkinson also performed his newly learned highest difficulty dive—the forward 1-1/2 somersault with two twists (39.10 points).
At “11 dive meets,” divers need to perform 11 dives compared to the six dives at dual meets during the season. The 11-dive format requires divers to perform one dive from each of the five groups (forward, back, reverse, inward and twist) within the first eight rounds. Divers are also required to perform six other dives from any of those groups for a total of 11 dives.
The 3-hour meet was Wilkinson’s first 11-dive meet. His previous high in a meet was nine dives.
Wilkinson will represent Yorktown-Somers on Jan. 30 at SUNY Purchase for the Section 1 Conference 2 Championship and has qualified and will compete at the Section 1 Championship (Sectionals) on Feb. 6.
